Woakes deems it fair not to be included in the England squad for the IND vs ENG Tests.

Pacer Chris Woakes has expressed understanding and acceptance regarding his exclusion from the England squad for the upcoming Test series against India. This decision, he notes, aligns with his performance record in subcontinent conditions and his age. While the desire to be part of the squad is inherent, Woakes sees the exclusion as a fair outcome, given his challenges on subcontinent pitches, particularly during the 2016 series in India where he managed only three wickets at a significant cost.

Woakes, 34 years old, boasts a commendable bowling average of 21.88 in home conditions, but this figure balloons to 51.88 overseas. The decision not to include him in the 16-member squad for the five-match Test series, beginning on January 25 in Hyderabad, seems to have been influenced by these performance differentials. The all-rounder, speaking to ‘ESPNCricinfo,’ conveyed mixed emotions but highlighted the fairness of the decision given his away record, especially in the subcontinent.

Reflecting on past experiences, Woakes recalls his challenging stint as an opener during an away Test series. Promoted due to the absence of James Anderson and Stuart Broad, he struggled both physically and in terms of performance, managing only five wickets in three Tests at an average of 48.80. A sore knee at the time led to subsequent surgery, causing him to miss six months of cricket.

Woakes emphasizes the importance of clear communication about his role, stating that he feels at ease with the decision. Looking ahead, he believes that skipping the tour of India could potentially extend his cricketing career, especially as he aims to play a significant role in white-ball cricket. Managing his body becomes crucial, and Woakes sees avoiding subcontinent tours where his type of bowling may be less effective as a wise decision for his overall longevity in the sport.

Meanwhile, former England skipper Michael Vaughan expresses surprise at Woakes’ omission from the squad. Vaughan believes that the all-rounder, with his skills and contributions, deserved a place in the lineup, signaling a difference in perspective within cricketing circles regarding Woakes’ role in the Test series against India.
