GoI Announces Implementation Of Citizenship Amendment Act

NEW DELHI: The Government of India (GoI) on Monday announced the implementation of the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) which aims to facilitate the granting of citizenship to non-Muslim migrants from Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afghanistan.

The law enables granting of citizenship to citizens of Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afghanistan belonging to Hindu, Sikh, Jain, Christian, Buddhist and Parsi communities, who had migrated to India before December 31, 2014.

Notably, the implementation of the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) was an integral part of the BJP’s 2019 Lok Sabha Election manifesto.

The Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) was passed in December 2019 and subsequently got the President’s assent but there were protests in several parts of the country against it. Over a hundred people lost their lives during the anti-CAA protests. (Agencies)
