NEW DELHI: Pankaj Udhas, the acclaimed ghazal maestro renowned for hits like “Chitthi Ayee Hai” and “Aur Ahista Kijiye Baatein,” passed away on February 26, after an extended illness.

The 72-year-old singer, who had a notable career as a playback artist in Bollywood films such as “Naam,” “Saajan,” and “Mohra,” breathed his last at around 11 am.

In a statement, the singer’s family said, “With a very heavy heart, we are saddened to inform you of the sad demise of Padmashri Pankaj Udhar on February 26, 2024, due to a prolonged illness.”

Born on May 17, 1951, in Jetpur, Gujarat, Pankaj Udhas began his career with the launch of the ghazal album titled “Aahat” in 1980. Swiftly, he became synonymous with ghazal music in India.

Over the years, Pankaj released numerous albums and graced the stage with many live concerts. Recognizing his contributions, Pankaj Udhas was bestowed with India’s fourth-highest civilian award, the Padma Shri.
